About:

Students at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District believe in second chances. That’s why they raised more than $2,000 to support an animal that needs a new lease on life.

The Student Council (which includes student athletes) held a fundraiser to benefit Milo the dog at the Long Island-based Second Chance Rescue. Milo, found injured and abandoned in another state, was brought to the rescue group in need of special equipment as he learns to walk again. A reading teacher from Unqua, who volunteers with Second Chance, came up with the idea for the fundraiser.

Student Council members, under the direction of advisers Leanne Leder and Deanna Musacchia, hung posters around the school, created fliers for their classmates to take home and made announcements encouraging donations. Students, teachers and staff collectively raised $2,125 for the cause. “It was pretty amazing to see the empathy that the students had for an animal” Ms. Leder said. “The entire school contributed to this effort.”
